August was yet another month with significant increase of passenger traffic for Eleftherios Venizelos Airport. More specifically, during August, the airport’s passenger traffic reached 2.54mn passengers, up 7.5%. The increase is associated with the rise of both domestic (+ 3.2%) and foreign (+ 9.8%) flights’ passengers.

Overall, between January and August 2017, airport traffic reached the airport traffic 14.5mn passengers, up 8.1%. This increase is mainly due to the successful course of international traffic with a 2-digit growth of 11.8%, while domestic flights have also recorded a small gain (1.6%).

However, it is worth noting that July seems to be the best performer, instead of August, demonstrating a trend that is being formed for Athens as a major destination. Last year AIA recorded 2.37mn passengers in July and 2.36mn passengers in August. This year, traffic was 2.56mn and 2.54mn passengers respectively.

Nevertheless, the average increase of 8.1% for the first eight months leads us to the conclusion that the probability for Athens International Airport to exceed 22mn passengers in 2017 is fading away, but following a solid course for a new absolute record performance between 21.5 and 21.7mn passengers.

The dynamics of the Airport are growing even in September, with a new daily Ryanair flight to Frankfurt and 2 direct flights per week from Air China to Beijing.
