EUROPE: Alstom unveiled the latest member of its Coradia electric multiple-unit family on October 2, when it presented full-size mock-ups of the Coradia Stream EMUs to be supplied to the Netherlands and Italy.

Coradia Stream is intended as a versatile and modular TSI-compliant platform for 160 km/h regional and 200 km/h inter-city trains, enabling European operators to choose configurations and interiors to match their needs.

The EMUs can be equipped for 1.5 kV DC, 3 kV DC, 15 kV 16.7 Hz and 25 kV 50 Hz electrification systems.  The aluminium-bodied motor, trailer and driving cars can have one or two 1 300 mm wide doors per car side, and the trains can be supplied in lengths of three to 10 cars.

NS Inter-city New Generation

Dutch national operator NS has unveiled a mock-up of the 79 Inter-city New Generation ordered in July 2016 for entry into service on the Amsterdam – Rotterdam–Breda and Den Haag–Eindhoven routes from 2021.

The €800m contract covers the supply of 49 five-car and 30 eight-car IC-NG units. The design has been developed with the support of a panel of 25 passenger representatives. Once it has been finalised, pre-series units will be built for testing in the Netherlands and abroad on test tracks and at the Rail Tec Arsenal climate chamber in Wien.

The EMUs will have first and second class accommodation, with 256 seats in the five-car units and 417 seats in the eight-car versions. There will be areas designed for working, resting or holding meetings, with 800 mm high entrances, wheelchair-accessible toilets, wi-fi, USB sockets, passenger information screens, intelligently-controlled LED lighting and space for luggage.

The EMUs will have a maximum speed of 200 km/h, and be equipped to run on the 25 kV 50 Hz HSL-Zuid high speed line as well as the 1.5 kV DC conventional network. ETCS and national safety systems will be fitted.

Trenitalia Pop

Separately, Alstom used the Expo Ferroviaria trade fair in Milano to unveil a mock-up of the Coradia Stream units which are to be supplied to Trenitalia under a €900m framework contract for up to 150 units awarded in August 2016. The first batch of 47 trains is to be delivered from early 2019.

To be branded ‘Pop’ by the operator, the 3 kV DC EMUs are designed to be highly modular, with a wide range of livery and interior and options enabling local authorities to customise the trainsets for their suburban and regional services. The three-car version will have 227 seats and the four-car version 305 seats, with a maximum speed of 160 km/h and an entrance height of 620 mm.

Fluid, dynamic, fast and light

‘We are very proud to present today in two different European countries two versions of this train’, said Wolfram Schwab, Alstom’s Vice-President for Regional & Intercity trains.

‘With its improved modularity, new passenger experience and weight savings, Coradia Stream opens a new chapter in the commercial success story of the Coradia regional range spanning more than 30 years. The name we have chosen for this train reflects its true spirit: fluid, dynamic, fast and light.’
