Albania’s National Council has approved a construction permit for the rebuilding of the 34.2km line between the capital Tirana and the Adriatic port of Durrës, together with the construction of a new 7.4km branch to Rinas International Airport.
According to local news agency ATA, the €90.4m project is being financed by the European Union with the aid of €35.4m in grants from the European Union’s Western Balkans Investment Framework (WBIF) and €36.8m in loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The remaining €16m will come from the Albanian government.
Albania’s deputy minister of infrastructure and energy, Mr Artan Shkreli, says the branch from Kashar to Rinas will open in June 2021, providing a 13-14 minute journey time from the airport to both Tirana and Durrës.
