Athens International Airport “Eleftherios Venizelos” demonstrated resilience towards the international environment despite the current conditions, in the first two months of 2020. Although, especially in February, coronavirus was spread almost in  all european countries, including Greece, AIA’s passenger traffic was still positive, increased by 2.8% to 1.36m passengers.

International passengers increased by 6.4%, while domestic passengers declined (-4.5%) due to reduced domestic services, compared to the same period last year. In January and February 2020, airport traffic reached 2.8m passengers, up 4.3%.

Foreign passengers increased by 8.3%, while domestic passengers decreased by 4%. However, March is not expected to record the same traffic as in the first two months of the year, not because of the virus outbreak in Greece, but due to the global impact on air transport.

It is noted that global conferences, exhibitions, events and travels are cancelled, with the airline industry being one of the worst affected. At this point in time, AIA that has shown a dynamic growth for six consecutive years, might show signs of stagnation, for the next (hopefully short) period, not regarding the airport itself but for the market  in general.
