Another PPP project for student residences in one of the country’s universities is in the process of implementation and tendering. After Thrace, Crete and Thessaly, the University of Western Macedonia is coming to put forward an ambitious plan for the construction of 750 student residences in Ptolemaida, Florina and Kozani. The project also includes a new versatile conference center on the Kozani campus.

The project was approved a few days ago by the PPP Interministerial Committee and has the University of Western Macedonia as its Implementing Agency. The auction of the project is considered as a matter of time with the expression of interest.

The University of Western Macedonia serves 41,000 students, while the lack of private residences as well as the dispersion of the existing facilities make the operation problematic and increase the operational costs of the University.

Where will the student residences be built?

In more detail now, the 750 student residences are divided as follows: 350 in the Kozani Campus, 150 in Florina, 150 in Kastoria and 100 in Ptolemaida. The participation of interested investors based on the experience that already exists from other PPP tenders for student residences will be of interest.

The PPP contract includes the financing, construction, operation, technical management and custodial-cleaning services of the building facilities in the 4 cities.

In a statement from the University of Western Macedonia it is stated, among other things, that “the approved program of new building projects with a total budget of 67.5 million euros, was one of the central priorities of the strategic development of the Foundation, as a modern European University and will significantly strengthen the organization and operation of the dynamic development path it has entered”.

Also as stated in the same announcement, the creation of high-level building infrastructure at the University of Western Macedonia:

-contributes to the development of an integrated university community,

-responds to the needs of increasing the increasing number of admitted students,

-covers the accommodation and food needs of eligible students, in the context of the University’s social policy, while addressing the fragmentation of current structures,

-ensures unhindered access to Higher Education for students with limited financial means,

-ensures significant savings from reducing the number of premises leases and housing allowances.
