The PPP tender for the road axis Kalamata-Pylos-Methoni is preparing to take the big step in December. According to information, at the beginning of the month the temporary contractor will be finalized and then the process of drawing up the contract and sending it for approval by the Audit Court will begin.
This is the largest road project in the southern Peloponnese and the second largest for the wider region, behind Patra-Pyrgos. Provided there are no further delays, the PPP contract may be signed in the first quarter of 2023.
The sponsoring scheme is AKTOR CONCESSIONS-INTRAKAT which managed to prevail in the relevant tender. Let us recall that the tender of the project started on June 19, 2019 with the expression of interest. Its duration was set at 30 years, four of which relate to the construction period. The cost of the project with the corresponding VAT for the entire period was estimated at 312.23 million euros.
The duration of the PPP contract will be 360 months (30 years). Repayment of the project will be made through availability payments or other installments during the period of operation.
It is noted that the project includes:
- The improvement and upgrading of approximately 20 km of existing roads,
- The construction of a new artery in a length of about 30 km,
- The adaptation and improvement of 7 km of vertical road network,
- The construction of a new side road network of 40 km,
- The construction of 12 bridges
- Many accompanying technical works such as level junctions, hydraulic works, retaining walls, etc.
- Construction of 15 km of local access roads.
What will be built?
The Kalamata-Pylos-Methoni road axis is 49 kilometers long and has been designated by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport as part of the country’s Secondary National Network.
More specifically, the Pylos-Methoni section belongs to National Road No. 9, Kalo Nero-Pylos-Methoni and the Pylos-Kalamata section to National Road 82, Sparti-Kalamata-Messini-Velika-Hatzi-Pylos.
The works that will be done will upgrade the existing axis to express traffic raising the levels of road safety, reducing the required times and will help the further development of the area.
More specifically, the following upgrades will be made per department:
Section 1: Kalamata-Rizomylos 16.4 km long (Kalamata-Asprochoma-Messini Entrance, Messini Bypass, Messini Exit-Velika connection with the approved study for the Rizomylos-Pylos road section).
The engraving moves generally in flat and locally in hilly relief, having gentle longitudinal slopes along its longest length. The section in question includes: improvement of the geometric and functional characteristics of the existing National Road, restoration of the local network, bypass of the city of Messina with a new alignment, development of level junctions, development of bridging of the Pamisos River and three bridging streams crossing the arterial road, development underpasses, construction of box culverts, development of drainage projects.
Section 2: Rizomylos-Pylos 24.4 km long (Rizomilos-Soulinari and Soulinari-Pylos).
This section is part of the National Road 82 “Sparti-Kalamata-Messini-Velika-Hatzi-Pylos” starting from the existing road to Pylos located approximately 600 meters southwest of the intersection to Gialova. The end of the line is located in the village of Rizomylos, where it joins the road axis Kalamata-Rizomylos (section 1). The excavation is a road project between provinces/settlements. The engraving has gentle longitudinal gradients throughout most of it.
Section 3: Pylos-Methoni, 7.9 km long (Pylos-Junction Finikountas-Methoni).
The starting point of the axis is located on the existing Pylos-Methoni National Road and coincides with the end of the “Gialova and Pylos single bypass” project. The end of the engraving is located at the northern entrance of the city of Methoni.
The excavation is an inter-provincial/settlement road project and has gentle gradients along most of it.
The overall goal of the project is to improve the geometric and functional characteristics of the existing road network, as well as to upgrade road safety. The road bypass of the city of Messina and the rest of the settlements up to Pylos will be done with a layout compatible with the General Urban Plans for the best possible service.
With its upgrade, the Kalamata-Pylos-Methoni axis will relieve traffic at the existing junction of the old Kalamata-Messina National Road, which during peak hours operates at an intolerable level of service with long delays and traffic blockages.
It will also ensure a better connection with Messina and the settlements west of it up to Methoni. Finally, it improves road access to the Kalamata airport, the Moreas highway and the Kalamata hospital, as well as industrial facilities in the area.
