The last step for the final reopening of the Tram line from Neos Kosmos to Syntagma took place yesterday. The first test route to the terminal in Syntagma took place – in the presence of STASY executives and technicians- more than two years after the interruption of the routes. From today, more intensive itineraries will start and the goal is that the whole line will be put into operation again next week and for the Tram to end again in Syntagma.
The big step was preceded by the successful tests that started from mid-October to Vouliagmeni Avenue, in the “forbidden” part of the underground passage of Ilissos river that had caused the temporary suspension of the line.
The reopening of the Neos Kosmos-Syntagma section is estimated to decongest the Syntagma, Acropolis, Syggrou / Fix and Neos Kosmos Metro stations, thus further helping to strengthen transportation. The restoration of the route to Syntagma, more than two years after the closure of the department, will mean the gradual use of the new Trams supplied by the French Alstom. The new “orange” Tram will be included in the itineraries from the beginning of 2021.
This will also mark the end of a period, during which the Tram -for the second time in its history (in Athens)- was challenged not only as a useful means of transportation for the city center, but more generally as a means of fixed trajectory that in addition to the Suburban Railway to Metro can be the backbone of the city’s urban transport.
What about Faliro and Piraeus
At the same time, as it seems, we are coming to a happy ending for the other issue of the Tram at the end towards Piraeus. There, according to information, the delivery of the relocated line to Faliro from the Attica Region to STASY is probable for the end of November.
If the issue of the building in Omiridou Skylitsi is resolved by the Municipality of Piraeus (with its partial demolition), the way is open for the start of operation of the extension to Piraeus by the end of the year.
The extension of the medium to Piraeus will extend the network by 5.4 km, to the center and the port of the city, with a single circular line that will be connected to the future Metro stations “Piraeus” and “Municipal Theater”, transforming the transportation towards the big port of the country.
