A €169m contract for 26 single and double-deck multiple units was signed in Ljubljana on April 17 by Slovenian Railways (SŽ) general director Mr Dušan Mes and Stadler Rail chairman Mr Peter Spuhler.

The order comprises 11 four-car Flirt single-deck EMUs, five three-car Flirt DMUs, and 10 three-car Kiss double-deck EMUs.

The 160km/h Flirt EMUs will be equipped for cross-border operation into Austria and Croatia. Each 80.7m-long set will seat 235 passengers, 12 of them in first class. The 70.4m-long 140km/h Flirt DMU will seat 171 passengers including 12 in first class.

The 79.8m-long Kiss EMUs will be used on domestic regional services. Each train will seat 292 passengers including 16 in first class.

All three variants will have spaces for two wheelchairs and five bicycles and all trains will be equipped with accessible toilets, which will be compliant with the Technical Specification for Interoperability for Passengers with Reduced Mobility (PRM-TSI).

Deliveries are due to begin within two years of contract signing.

The contract includes an option for a further 26 trains, and Mes said he expects this will be exercised by September 2019.
