Athens International Airport’s streak continues with a further 10.4% traffic increase in January

Athens International Airport is steadily “on a roll”; January 2017 report regarding passenger traffic, recorded a 10.4% increase or 1.2mn more passengers in absolute figures. Despite a slight decline, by 1.8%, of the domestic passengers’ traffic, due to limited availability, international passengers increased by 18.5% forming an impressive average increase.

Greek travelers increased by 19% whereas the international ones remained in last year’s levels. The overall flight count for January was 11,898 recording an increase by 3.9%. Domestic flights recorder a minimal decrease by 0.2% while international flights increased significantly by 7.1%.

The performance figures of the Airport are of course very encouraging and create more and more expectations about the future. That is why its interior spaces are being readjusted in order to deal with the increasing traffic. If AIA’s monthly traffic continues at full gallop, in the end of 2017 we expect a new impressive record of 22.5mn passengers. What could affect traffic in both Athens’ and Thessaloniki’s Airport’s though, is Ryanair’s plans to cut down domestic flights between the country’s two largest cities.
